Guitar Strumming Notation

Guitar strumming patterns are used to add variety to your chord progressions. So far we have been just strumming DOWN with the beat, however, we can also use an UP strum in between the beats.
We use notation for this that originates in violin music(showing the up and down bowing) as well as more modern versions that use arrows or letters to show the desired strumming.
The DOWN strum tends to be a heavier strum as it hits the low pitch strings first, and the UP strum has a lighter tone colour as it hits the thin high pitch strings first. You can vary this by using a heavy strum in any direction.

Some songs will use a particular strumming pattern that is only part of that song, like a "hook" to make you remember that particular piece.
The song Wonderwall by the band OASIS uses a very recognisable strumming pattern that makes the song almost instantly recognisable. The chords are fairly common, but in combination with the strumming it becomes an original piece of music.

Sound Effects in Movies - FOLEY

Foley artists make many of the movie sound effects you hear in your favorite films. Here’s a look at how they do it. Gary Hecker (Django Unchained, Hancock, 300), Dawn Lunsford (Whiplash, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, Transformers: Age of Extinction) and Alicia Stevenson (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, X-Men, Transformers: Age of Extinction) take us through their post-production process.

The BASIC BEAT

The Basic Beat

The basic beat is a rhythm that has become popular in music over the last 100 years. Originally it comes from marching music where the BASS DRUM is played on each left foot, every 1st and 3rd beat of the music. The snare drum is played on the 2nd and 4th beat, this is called the BACK BEAT.

To make the beat more interesting modern music adds bass drum beats to the pattern to create variations. These variations add interest to the sections of the music.

Graphic Notation Composition.

This task has you creating a piece of music that will tell some kind of story.

You could give us the impression of:

  • a car chase
  • A journey through time
  • Your trip to school
  • a walk around the school.
Here is an example of a composition by students at another school. If you read the description it tells you what they were supposed to achieve in their composition.

Download a copy of the scaffold below and use it to help you create your own composition.

Year 7 Music writing stuff.

In class today we played the djembe drums demonstrating a few different musical ideas.

  1. Ostinato: playing a rhythm that is repeated to create a pattern.
  2. Polyrhythm: When many different rhythms are layered on top of each other at the same time.
  3. Improvisation: Making up a new rhythm on the spot! Composing as you go along.
By using our first names we can hear the rhythms from speech and translate them into musical rhythms on the drum.

The concept DURATION covers when and how long sounds are played for so these terms are part of the musical concept DURATION. For more information on duration and rhythms visit this site.

Scales and Modes on Guitar.

For the Aeolian mode you can improvise a melody over the chords:

||: Am / / / | Am / / / | E / / / | E / / / :||

To improvise over the Major scale you can use the chords:

||: C / / / | / / / / | FMaj7 / / / | / / / / :||

You could create your own chord progression using any of the above chords then improvise a melody using any of the notes from the Aeolian mode in A, or Major scale in C.
